This loss early in the qualifying campaign, as well as
the comprehensive domination of the soviet team during the match signaled the
end of the Platini generation.
France would not qualify for this tournament nor the
next World Cup.
After this match, Platini stated that qualification
for the Euros is effectively over and France must concentrate on preparing
younger players for the World Cup Qualifiers.
