Euro-1988 Qualifying France USSR

France: Joel Bats, Basile Boli (87`Philippe Vercruysse), Manuel Amoros, Michel Platini, Jean-Marc Ferreri, Jean Tigana, Luis Fernandez, Jean-Pierre Papin (70`Bruno Bellone), Yanick Stopyra, Philippe Jeannol, William Ayache. Coach: Henri Michel.

USSR: Rinat Dasaev, Alexander Chivadze, Anatoli Demianenko, Vladimir Bessonov (34`Vagiz Khidiatullin), Oleg Kuznetsov, Vasili Rats, Sergei Aleinikov, Pavel Yakovenko, Alexander Zavarov, Igor Belanov,  Sergei Rodionov (82`Oleg Blokhin). Coach: Valery Lobanovsky.

This loss early in the qualifying campaign, as well as the comprehensive domination of the soviet team during the match signaled the end of the Platini generation.
France would not qualify for this tournament nor the next World Cup.
After this match, Platini stated that qualification for the Euros is effectively over and France must concentrate on preparing younger players for the World Cup Qualifiers.
USSR qualified from this European Championship-1988 qualifying group.
