Focus on : Arsenal's Robin Van Persie 100 Goals

Robin van Persie has given his biggest hint yet that he wants to stay at Arsenal when his contract ends in 2013. The Arsenal captain, who Saturday finished one shy of equalling Alan Shearer's 36-goal tally for a calendar year, has yet to sit down with Arsenal to talk about extending his deal. It has encouraged Manchester City, who hope to sign him in a £30million deal at the end of the season. And, though Arsenal are ready to offer Van Persie a club-best £150,000-a-week deal to keep him, Van Persie will not hold contract talks with chief executive Ivan Gazidis until the summer, and he has previously spoken about his frustration at the club's failure to win major trophies. But the Holland striker, who has two young children with his wife Bouchra, has revealed that his ideal future would be to remain in London. He said: 'We love the life in London and I enjoy watching my kids grow up here. They grow up like the English kids with good manners and values of England. The place where we live, just outside the city, is fantastic. We have everything we want. 'The English people are so incredibly polite where I live. People are nice here. That makes life a real pleasure. 'My children have become more English than Dutch. They have taken up the culture and values of England. 'It makes me melt at times when I see how well my children are doing here. When Shaqueel has half-term with school, he does not want to go back to the Netherlands any more.' Van Persie has also paid tribute to Arsenal fans in an interview with a Dutch newspaper, saying that listening to them chanting his name is among his biggest thrills. 'That is the biggest compliment I could wish for,' he said. 'Arsenal fans are real lovers of the game. 'They don't miss a thing. I like the banners, everything they do.

When I come on to the pitch, I hear them chant. 'At Arsenal the fans so want me to do well. And that gives me a kick. That's what I do it for. As a thank you, I want to give them so much in return in matches.' Despite the departure of team-mates and friends Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy, Van Persie says he is confident about the club's future. 'No player here is bigger than the club. Arsenal will always come first. Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires and Dennis Bergkamp used to be the players who people came to the stadium for. 'They thought there would be nothing once they had done. But here, at Arsenal, everyone can see that young talent grow into new stars. Look at Theo Walcott, look at Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. Young players are given the opportunity to grow and develop.' Van Persie took over the captaincy at Arsenal when Fabregas left for Barcelona last summer and has already been compared with legendary Gunners skipper Tony Adams. 'I feel flattered but Tony Adams was by far the best captain Arsenal have had. If he could return in some capacity, I will be the first man to support this. He is the perfect example of a born winner.'

For so long he looked like a man made from glass graceful and elegant, yet so delicate and fragile. But in 2011 Robin van Persie could well have been carved from solid gold.  The striker fell one short of Alan Shearer’s 1995 Premier League record for the number of goals scored in a calendar year, but he eclipsed the mark of the man he called Arsenal’s ‘best ever player’, Thierry Henry.  By scoring his 35th top flight goal of 2011 in the 1-0 win against QPR , Van Persie beat the Arsenal club record set by the Frenchman in 2004. Henry, who rejoined his old club for two months on loan from New York Red Bulls, was there to see Van Persie dart on to Andrey Arshavin’s delicious through ball and unleash a shot with that lethal left foot.  The former master applauded his old apprentice as Van Persie flashed a toothy smile of pure joy and ran over to the bench to hug Manuel Almunia and shake the hand of his manager, Arsene Wenger. Wenger had spoken to his  captain about the record before the game because he was concerned Van Persie would try too hard, as he did in the 1-1 draw against Wolves.  The Arsenal boss insisted Van Persie was relaxed, but this is a man driven by success who has not won the trophies his talent deserves.  For now, at least, individual honours will have to do. Henry made history as part of a team who won the title without losing a game, but Van Persie’s achievements have come during a year Wenger looks back on as one of the most difficult of his career.

It makes the Dutchman’s 48 goals in 56 matches, including his first professional hat-trick, seem even more remarkable. Van Persie said: ‘It’s fantastic. And it was about time! I have had some knocks in the past, but 2011 was clear with no injuries and I could enjoy myself. It has been my best year ever. There’s a bit of relief that the year has gone how it did, but I’m also happy to give something back to Arsenal and the boss. ‘It makes me proud. I’m a sportsman. You want to achieve the highest. My main thing is to win games, but I want to achieve the highest possible.‘Thierry set that record, he is an unbelievable player and on this one, I have just beaten him. I fell one short of Shearer’s record, but maybe next year... ’ Van Persie has thrived on the responsibility placed on him at Arsenal, both as a leader and the side’s main striker. It is no coincidence that it was in his captain’s column that he reflected on the past 12 months. ‘Not long ago, I was not even convinced I could play as a main striker,’ he said. ‘But I could feel every single game, I was getting fitter and better, which is an unbelievable feeling.’  He has certainly learned to be his side’s out-and-out striker, with all that entails, as Neil Warnock and his QPR side found to their cost. His talent has long been evident. Now all Arsenal fans’ New Year’s wish must be that he stays fit to extend the best 12 months of his career into 2012.
