"Hero" The Bobby Moore Story

In mid-February 1993, football fans the nation over were stunned to learn that their favourite son was suffering from cancer. A little over a week later came the worst possible news - Bobby Moore had died. Immediately the verbal and floral tributes began to flood in. Newspapers, radio and télévision ail paid fulsome homage whilst the main gates at Upton Park were adorned by a mass of flowering végétation. West Ham s match at Sunderland on the Saturday following Bobby Moore ’s death went ahead as scheduled and was preceded by a one- minute silent tribute, as was every match in the land. At the first home game after his passing (v Wolverhampton Wanderers) the Hammers fans turned it into their own memorial service to the great man. More recently there has been a spécial service at Westminster Abbey in memory of England’s finest footballer, attended by hundreds of people who admired him both from the terraces and from personal contact.
Now, the first Englishman to hold the Jules Rimet Trophy and the first West Ham player to grasp the FA Cup has a monument. With the Moore family’s blessing, the massive structure that now adorns the area where the South Bank once stood is known as the Bobby Moore Stand.
