Coupe des Clubs Champions 1972 1973 Real Madrid Ajax Amsterdam

By the time the two sides next met, in the 1972/73 European Cup semi-finals, Ajax were on the verge of achieving what the great Real Madrid side of the 1950s attained and that was to win three European Cups in succession. Ajax were playing a brand of football somewhat never seen before known as ‘Total Football’ – the origins traced back to Ajax coaches Vic Buckingham (who also discovered Johan Cruijff) and Jack Reynolds, both laid the foundations of this footballing philosophy and it was taken on further by legendary coach Rinus Michels, who played under Reynolds.

Ajax were now managed by Stefan Kovács – Michels had moved on to coach Real’s arch-rivals FC Barcelona in 1971 – in this period of success they were known as the ‘Golden Ajax’Ajax took a 2-1 lead to the Bernabéu on 25 April, 1973 (Jose Martinez “Pirri” again getting the away goal for Los Merengues), and it was on this day that according to David Winner, author of ‘Brilliant Orange’ the greatest moment of Ajax’s ‘Golden Age’ was not a goal or a great save. It was a simple piece of juggling by a player who had idolised the legends which had graced the turf of the Bernabéu before him.

Gerrie Mühren had the 110,000 fans applauding, rather than the customary white handkerchiefs away teams were used to. It was said to be the moment Ajax took over from Real Madrid as the true Kings of Europe. This was a moment of arrogance and joie de vivre that encapsulated the ethos of Kovács’ Ajax. “It was the moment when Ajax and Real Madrid changed positions,” said Mühren. “Before then it was always the big Real Madrid and the little Ajax. When they saw me doing that, the balance changed.”Mühren would score the only goal of the game, the aggregate score of 3-1 barely did any justice to the superiority of Ajax over the two legs. Ajax would subsequently beat Juventus in the final to take their place in European club football history.

The first game in Amsterdam was not dissimilar to the game against Bayern. Again Ajax dominated possession as they tried to find a way through their opponents defence, and again they grew more and more frustrated as they battled in vain. But this time the visitors provided more of a threat themselves. The pace of Real’s forwards meant that they were always dangerous on the counter attack, as they showed on 15 minutes when Aguilar had a goal controversially disallowed for offside. Following a goalless first half, Ajax stepped up the pressure after the break. On 50 minutes Cruyff missed an easy chance and soon afterwards Hulshoff hit the bar. Moments later Hulshoff found the target as he knocked home a rebound to give Ajax the lead. As with the clash with Bayern, the opening Ajax goal was soon followed by another as on 77 minutes Krol shot home through a crowd of defenders to give the Dutchmen a comfortable lead. But just five minutes later, Krol brought down Santillana when he was through on goal and Pirri scored with the resulting free-kick. From then until the final whistle Ajax pounded the Real goal, but Remon was outstanding as he made a succession of great saves to leave the Spaniards in a strong position with only a one goal deficit to make up in the return match.

  3. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=658D1H9S seems to be corrupt. The download stalls at 7.1 MB, and won't budge.

Considering what the other poster said, could there be a new upload for this match, please?
