Champions League 1998 1999 Manchester United Juventus

Semi Finals,
First and Second Leg

In the qualifying round, a 2-0 win over Lodz at Old Trafford, and a 0-0 draw in Poland, took English league runners-up Manchester United
into the league. Their campaign began with a breathtaking game of football against Barcelona at Old Trafford. With Giggs and Scholes cutting swathes through the Spanish defence, the first goal came early on, Giggs soaring to connect with a Beckham cross in the 17th minute. Seven minutes later, Scholes stuck in a rebound from keeper Ruud Hesp. In the second half, Barcelona were irresistible. Rivaldo found Sonny Anderson, whose shot through the United defence eluded Schmeichel. In the 60th minute, Stam fouled Rivaldo in the area and Giovanni converted the penalty. 2-2.

Beckham curved in a glorious 25-yard free-kick four minutes later, and Luis Enrique levelled with a penalty minutes later after Nicky Butt handled. At the Olympic Stadium, Elber struck first for Bayern Munich in the 1 Hh minute From what seemed an offside position. United fought back, and a Beckham cross in the 24th minute was met by a splendid diving header from Yorke which beat Oliver Kahn. Just after the break, a Yorke flick found Scholes and Kahn was beaten again. In the last minute, Bixente Lizarazu sent a long through ball into the box, Schmeichel failed to reach it, and Elber headed in the equaliser.

In game three in Denmark, played on a sodden pitch. United crushed Brondby. Defensive confusion allowed Giggs an easy goal in the 2nd minute, and Giggs again rose above the defence to head in a Jesper Blomqvist cross twenty minutes later. Giggs then turned provider, sending Cole down the pitch to sidefoot a shot past keeper Mogens Krogh. Brondby scored from a free-kick in the 34th minute, but United notched up three more within eight minutes in the second half. In the 54th minute, Keane headed in off the post, then Yorke headed in a Neville cross, and a Solskjaer drive from a Yorke lay-off took the tally to six. Ebbe Sand scored a last-minute consolation. Now top of the league, United handed out more punishment to Brondby at Old Trafford, where the defensive Danes could not cope with the fast raiding of the United forwards. In the 6th minute, Beckham turned in a 30-yard free-kick, and Phil Neville and Cole, the latter with a delicate chipped shot from a tight angle, added to the scoreline. In the 28th minute, a mazy run from Blomqvist set Beckham free on the wing and his perfectly-judged cross was headed in by Yorke. Scholes added a fifth in the second half.

Another thrilling game took place at the Nou Camp. Barcelona, needing maximum points, dominated the opening spell with Anderson scoring in the first minute. Schmeichel saved well from Rivaldo and Anderson, and United replied in the 25th minute when Blomqvist passed from the left to Yorke and the striker's 20-yard effort beat keeper Hesp. Shortly after the break, a Cole and Yorke one-two was converted by Cole. In the 56th minute, a swerving, left-foot free kick from Rivaldo deceived an out-of-position Schmeichel, and twelve minutes later Yorke headed in a Beckham cross. Rivaldo's overhead kick in the 73rd minute levelled a frantic game, although the Brazilian still had time to hit the bar from 35 yards. United now had to beat Bayern at Old Trafford to qualify as league leader. With Effenberg and Jens Jeremies dominating midfield, Elber and Zickler both headed just wide in the first half.

However, United struck first when Giggs cut the ball back from the left and Keane sent a low shot past Kahn in the 43rd minute. Wing-back Thomas Strunz headed on an Effenberg corner in the 57th minute and the Bosnian striker Hasan Salihamidzic put the ball over the line. Towards the end, with both teams realising they had the points they needed to progress, the game turned into something of a charade. At the whistle, United had qualified as second-best runner-up.
Then in the Quarter Final, United passed Inter Milan and it was time for the Semi against Juventus.

At Old Trafford, United were outclassed by a thoroughbred Juventus performance. The Italian side controlled the first half with their flowing movement and immaculate touch, and Davids and Zidane were in superb form. A clever ball in the 24th minute from Davids to Conte through the United defence was controlled by Conte and shot low past Schmeichel's right. With Beckham and Giggs effectively policed by Di Livio and Conte, most of the play was in the United half. After the interval, United went in desperate search of a goal with Keane, Giggs and Scholes all having shots smothered and a Sheringham goal was ruled offside. In the very last minute of the game, Giggs smashed in a shot from a Beckham cross and United had levelled.

In Turin, United went two goals down in the first eleven minutes. In the 6th minute, Inzaghi knocked in a pass from Zidane and five minutes later Inzaghi scored another with a deflected shot off Stam. However, a much improved United performance saw Keane pull one back with a header from a Beckham cross in the 23rd minute and Yorke also with a header ten minutes later. The tie was now level. The stalemate continued through a tense second half until, with six minutes remaining, Yorke on the attack was brought down by keeper Angelo Peruzzi, the ball reached Cole and the striker coolly finished at the far post. United were in the Final but would be without Keane and Scholes, both of whom were booked.
