UEFA European Cup 1979 1980 Dinamo Tbilisi Liverpool

First Round Second Leg
3 octobre 1979
Boris Paichadze  Stadium

As many Liverpool supporters had anticipated two weeks  earlier,  after seeing Dynamo Tbilisi  in action   at  Anfield,   the   shortcomings   of  Bob Paisley's team were cruelly exposed in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. On a wet afternoon, with the rain falling incessantly from a grey sky, a euphorie crowd of around 80,000 at the Dynamo Stadium watched Tbilisi give Liverpool a roasting. It was one of the Reds's worst defeats in Europe. Liverpool were well below par. They had not made a confident start to the season, having won only twice in their opening seven league games. Bob Paisley had been quick to argue that Liverpool's mediocre performance at Anfield had made Tbilisi look better than they were, but this was not borne out by the events of the second leg. Dynamo Tbilisi were well worth their moment of glory. They were a fine team. Nodar Akhalkatsi's team went on to win the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981, and many of their players would make a mark in international football. In Tbilisi, against Liverpool, they reigned suprême.

If Liverpool had taken some of their early chances, then the outcome may well hâve been very different. Jimmy Case produced a fine save from Gabeliya as early as the second minute, and had ne hit the net then, Liverpool would hâve gained a grip on the game. Liverpool held on for 54 minutes, but just as Georgian heads were beginning to drop, and signs of frustration creep into their game, Vladimir Gutsaev scored. It could not hâve been more timely. The goal put Liverpool behind on the away-goal rule, and meant that Paisley's men needed to score. As they ventured upfield, they inevitably left gaps in their defence. Terry McDermott and Ray Kennedy both went close and might hâve made more of their chances, but it was the Georgians who capitalised on a good opening, when Georgi Chilaya raced 60 yards out of defence, beating player after player, before squeezing it to Ramaz Shengeliya, who put it away. In the 80th minute, Aleksander Chivadze made it 3-0 when he converted a penalty. Liverpool's players reckoned it a harsh decision by the West German referee, Heinz Aldinger, but overall they couldn't cornplain — they had been beaten by a fine side, who played their football in the true traditions of the game.

  3. reduard,
It was a match round of 16 Champions Cup (now UEFA Champions League). Next of round Dynamo Tbilisi lost to Hamburg SV, with Keegan, Kaltz, Magat and Hrubesch...1-3, 2-3. In the Internet network is 43 minute video review of the first match in Hamburg.
